Grain Brain

Ever get to a room and don’t remember why you’re there? Or start a sentence and forget the point? It may not be as simple as chalking it up to forgetfulness or a ‘senior moment’. It could be the start of something far more damaging – brain degeneration.

Does that make you want to know what could cause brain degeneration, or brain atrophy? It made me wonder, so I researched it. Simply, brain atrophy starts with inflammation in your body. Inflammation is swelling, irritation or pain – even fat cells are considered inflammation. And that leads to free radicals, or rogue cells which kill off healthy cells including brain cells. When enough brain cells die, “brain shrinkage” happens, which can result in Dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

So what if I told you that sugar – yes, SUGAR – could be a brain toxin? And that wheat, carbs & sugar are the brain’s silent killers. A study published just this August (2013) in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that even in people without diabetes, above normal blood sugar is associated with an increased risk of developing dementia. This finding goes beyond previously seen links between diabetes and dementia. “It establishes for the first time, convincingly, that there is a link between dementia and elevated blood sugars in the non-diabetic range,” says study author Dr. David Nathan, a Harvard Medical School professor and the director of the Diabetes Center and Clinical Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital.

What can be done to protect those brain cells? Well, you can go cold turkey on sugar and flour like I have, for a one year experiment. But I’m not necessarily recommending that for you! The goal is to consume fewer baked goods and replace them with fresh vegetables and fruits. Limit whole grains to one or two servings per day.
