The Importance of a Checklist

This morning I woke up with a whole list of things that I wanted to accomplish.  I’m a little “out of order” for how my Thursdays usually work because what’s ‘normal’ is that I hike, pretty much first thing.  But this morning, I need to replenish the Vanilla elfbites supply and I want to bake before hiking.  So rather than try to be beautiful for this video blog, I’m in my hiking clothes – ready to bake elfbites and wanting to cram everything possible, into this morning.

Today I want to talk about the importance of consistency in a healthy lifestyle.  That doesn’t mean that you can’t ever deviate from the plan, but it’s working the plan that will get you to your goal.

Take my elfbites, for example.  Consistency is critical.  People like them, or not, based on their first impression.  If one bite is different from another bite because I’ve not mixed it well enough, or I’ve added something more to make it more appealing one time and not the next, people won’t know what to expect.  Eventually, if the product isn’t the same every time, repeat sales will dwindle and will eventually drop off completely.

Last weekend I visited my family and proudly brought elfbites along with me.  Family can be brutally honest and my dad told me that he wasn’t really very impressed with my bites.  He apologized the next morning…   Another family member said she could smell the stevia prior to even taking a bite, yet the next bite she tasted, didn’t have that.   And I was reminded how important consistency – not only in ingredients, but in method, matters.      And there will be a check list to follow today when I bake,  just as pilots do when preparing for a trip and flying a plane, as surgeons do, when operating on a patient and as we should, when living a healthy lifestyle.

It doesn’t mean we are weak, following a methods check-list.  It means that we care.  About consistency, and that our health is important enough to pay attention to.  Because in an emergency, if we have the checklist firmly implanted in our heads, we will default to our training, not to the fridge or pantry to attempt to alleviate our worries and fears.

My hope today is that you’ll be inspired to write your own check-list for health.  And that you’ll review it morning and night to evaluate what and how you’ve done.  Some things you may want to include are whether you’ve drank the appropriate amount of water for the day, whether you’ve eaten 7 – 9 vegetables over the course of the day, or even if you’ve said something nice about yourself out-loud.
