Beat the Heat with COLD BREW Coffee…

Do you ever have those days where you just don’t think you can get out of bed to go work out?

I have the solution for you! COFFEE… (I can find LOTS of studies listing the benefits…)

I didn’t learn to like coffee until I was in my 30’s. And all because of a contest they have in Canada at a donut shop called Tim Horton’s. The contest is to ‘Roll up the Rim to Win’. My kids loved the game, and I loved the thrill of a possible prize! I used to order a Large-Double-Double, which means a little coffee with A LOT of cream and A LOT of sugar.

Now, I drink it black and stir in a tablespoon of coconut oil (for all the benefits of healthy ‘fat’). I used to have my coffee 1st with my quiet time and then work out later, which would give me lots of time to enjoy my coffee! But then I started “TRAINING”. My training started July 1st – which in Arizona means MONSOON season! Hot (which is normal) and HUMID (for us, at between 20-50% humidity). Hot coffee doesn’t work before strapping on the heart monitor and shoes at 5:15 a.m.!  It has to be quick!

My solution?

COLD BREW! There are other ‘recipes’ out there, but I’ll give you mine. It’s super simple!

1. Start with your favorite coffee. I’ve been buying mine at Costco because it’s a big bag and inexpensive, but tastes great. Before leaving the store, I grind it to a COURSE grind.

2. I found 2 laundry bags for shoes at Marshall’s one day which is perfect for the coffee! I place 3 cups of my course coffee grounds into them (double lined so grounds don’t float through).

3. Then I put the bag of coffee in a bowl (not the final container because it’s hard to get the grounds out through a small hole on top without making a huge mess) and cover it with 8 cups of water (or you can make a double recipe if your bowl is big enough). Cover the bowl with saran wrap and let it just sit on the counter for 15-24 hours. That’s it!

4. The next day, remove the bag of coffee and pour your cold brew coffee into a container and put it in the fridge. I fill up a glass with ice and half water (you could also use milk, coconut milk or almond milk instead of the water). Then fill the rest of the glass with your coffee concentrate and enjoy!

I take my coffee grounds and put them in my planters outside or around the citrus tress which adds nutrients back into the soil! It’s a win-win for all! The coffee bags rinse out easily, dry quickly inside and slide back into the drawer for that next batch of delicious coffee.
